With the rise in FM radio and the AOR (Album Oriented Rock) format, consumers began preferring albums over singles, and albums were selling like never before. As a result, corporate rock was coming on the scene in 1976, but in some merciful ying-yang moment of cosmic symmetry, punk rock was rearing it’s snotty head at the same time.
They Do Sell’Em Like They Used To: Due to increasing album sales, in 1976 the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) created the Platinum album certification, to award albums with sales of a million plus. In 1976 a total of six albums went platinum, while 2014 only saw four platinum albums.
